The
Tyranny of Passing
All of us,
transgendered and otherwise, live under the constant "Tyranny of Passing" - of
questioning our sense of belonging against our self worth. Are we living up to
the societal roles and expectations that are imposed on us? Are we accepted and
valued by others? Should we care?
Only within the last few decades have transgendered folks been seduced by the
ability to assimilate, made possible by the availability of recent hormone and
surgical techniques, so totally that they can deny their transgender status and
lock themselves into the closet of assimilation. This has absolved society of
its responsibility to recognize more than two genders!
